Sensitivity of the 'References' step
When a company asks you to provide references, it often means that you are a finalist and the preferred candidate, and they are just looking for confirmation of their decision. Screwing up this step could cost you the job at the last minute.
The Five Golden Rules
- Rule 1: Don't put it on your CV! Keep the list of references in a separate file (PDF) and only submit it when explicitly asked to do so.
- Rule 2: Ask in advance: Never give someone's number without their knowledge! Call them first and ask nicely: “Would you mind if I put you as a reference for a new job opportunity?” And as a client (if possible). This gives a comprehensive (360 degree) picture of your professional personality.
- Rule 5: Later thanks: Whether you get the job or not, call them later and thank them for their time and support. This keeps your network strong.
