Common questions for managers and how to answer them

  • How do you deal with an underperforming employee?
The ideal answer: Explain your methodology. Start by analyzing the problem by sitting down with the employee amicably to understand the reasons (is it a lack of training or personal problems?), then create a clearly defined Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) with a specific time frame for follow-up.
  • Tell me about a time when your team failed to achieve a goal?
Perfect answer: A true leader takes responsibility. State the situation frankly, explain how you took responsibility as a leader without blaming individuals, then focus on the lessons learned and how you modified the strategy to ensure that failure would not be repeated.
  • How do you motivate your team during difficult times?
Ideal answer: Talk about transparency and constant communication. Sharing the Big Picture with the team and linking their daily goals to the company’s success creates internal motivation that is stronger than financial incentives.
