Common confusion between the two concepts
In the Middle East and many countries of the world, we use the terms (CV) and (Resume) to refer to the same document. But in the United States and Canada, there is a huge difference between the two, and using one in place of the other may cause you professional embarrassment.
What is a Resume?
- Length: One to two pages maximum.
- Content: A very condensed summary of the experiences and skills directly related to the job applied for only.
- Usage: It is required in 99% of corporate jobs. And regular for-profit institutions.
What is a CV (Curriculum Vitae)?
- Length: Unlimited, may reach 5 or 10 pages!
- Content: Comprehensive documentation of all your academic and professional career in detail (research, scientific publications, awards, grants, lectures you have given).
- Usage: Required exclusively for jobs. Academic (universities), scientific research, and scholarships.
Conclusion: What do you do in our region?
When a company in the Arab world asks you to send (CV), they actually mean (Resume). So, always send your short, straightforward version of one to two pages, unless you are applying for a post as a university professor or scientific researcher.
