Resume Design: Do Colors and Images Increase or Destroy Your Chances?

The ongoing debate: Should your CV be colorful and photogenic, or black and white and simplified? Here's the definitive guide to choosing a design.

Common Design Mistake

Many job seekers think that flashy graphic design (full of colorful charts and icons) will make their resume stand out among applicants. The fact is that in 80% of cases these designs lead to automatic rejection. Why? Because automated tracking systems (ATS) cannot extract text from within complex designs.

When do you use a personal photo?

Laws vary by country. In the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, posting a photo is grounds for immediate rejection to avoid racial bias and discrimination. In the Middle East and Germany, having a professional photo is acceptable and common. As a rule of thumb: Don't post an image unless you're explicitly asked to do so or it's strictly the norm in your country.

Golden Rules of Design for 2026

  • Simplicity is elegance: Use color carefully (dark blue for headlines with black text is fine).
  • Avoid skill rating graphs: Putting (4 stars out of 5) next to an Excel skill means nothing to a hiring manager and a bot won't read it. Write the skills in clear text.
  • Use white space: Do not cram words on top of each other. Empty spaces between sections relax the reader's eye and make your resume look professional and tidy.
